Adulthood Can Be Messy

Adulthood Can Be Messy

Whoever said adulting isn’t messy should have a nose as long as Pinocchio. No matter how many straight A’s you received in college nothing, or no one, has fully prepared us for adulthood. So, with the new year in full swing I figured why not start out 2017 with a few survival tips, how does that sound?

Here are (some) bulletproof tips that will help you shine through this crazy thing called life:

1.  It’s Ok, Really
One of my biggest struggles in my twenties has been recognizing that not only is it inevitable but it is in fact OK to completely screw up. Experience is the best teacher and the sooner you embrace that mindset the sooner you will be able to take a leap forward. Instead of getting down on yourself about not being perfect 24/7 welcome your missteps as learning curves and walk away from each ‘mistake’ with a lesson learned attitude.

2.    A Simple Gesture
Nothing compares to a handwritten note. Especially in today’s world where the only thing we find in our mailbox are overdue bills it’s certainly a sweet surprise to see find an unexpected envelope addressed to you. Whether it’s after a job interview or a taking the time to acknowledge a Christmas present, a thank you note goes a long way as people will never forever your thoughtful gesture. If it’s tricky for you to find someone’s physical address or you feel it may be crossing boundaries the least you could do is send a email expressing your gratitude.

3.    Speak Up For Yourself
Or forever hold your peace. Do you deserve the raise? Do you have a creative idea to share at a meeting? Do you have an all-consuming crush? God gave you a voice for a reason!! Have the confidence to speak up, you never know where it can lead!

4.    Advice
A never trend when growing up is that all the sudden everyone becomes a certified life coach and will give their unsolicited opinion. Whether it’s how to land your dream job, who you should date or where you should live – there will always be whispers in your ear. My advice? Buy earplugs. Become attuned with where you are in life that no matter who is breathing down your neck you stay on your own track because after all, this is YOUR life.

5.    Clean Up
A part of adulthood is being man, or woman, enough to clean up after yourself because life is messy enough, your apartment doesn’t need to be too. Without fail, I have a date with cleaning products every Sunday night. Sexy, huh? Clorox® Regular-Bleach is as easy and cost-efficient as cleaning products get. No matter what the scenario; cleaning up after a girl’s night with wine flowing or when bae brings home chocolate and I forget to wash my hands before touching the cabinents – Clorox is there to do the dirty work.

6.    Catch Your Z’s
Repeat after me; sleep is precious. Navigating through the real world requires you to make time to rest and relax, don’t deprive yourself of downtime! Netflix and chill is coming with us in 2017!

Your fellow twenty-something,
Chels
