How To Be A Healthy Traveler

How To Be A Healthy Traveler

If you’re a travel bug who wants to stick to your healthy New Year resolutions, this post is for you. When away from your day to day routine it’s tempting to throw your good intentions out the window but before you do you should know this; it is possible to stay healthy while on the road. Whether you’re jumping on a plane for pleasure or business these tips can help you become a smart and savvy traveler.

8 Ways To Stay Healthy While Traveling:

1.   A Balanced Start
Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, even on travel days. With an on the go lifestyle smoothies are my go to breakfast choice. Not only am I able to pack a ton of nutrients into one meal but it takes hardly any time to make. One of my favorite smoothie ingredients is Shakeology - vanilla flavor all the way. Many of Shakeology's fruit and vegetable sources have been chosen for their high concentration of healthy natural substances plus the taste tricks you into thinking you’re drinking a treat! If you have an early flight make sure all of your ingredients are organized and at arm’s reach. Toss a serving of Shakeology along with 1 cup of frozen mixed berries, 1 cup of almond milk and a teaspoon of peanut butter (I prefer almond butter) all into a blender and you’re travel day will be off to a healthy and energized start.

2.   Reusable Water Bottle
One of my biggest pet peeves when traveling is how much a bottle of water is!! Oh, $8 to stay hydrated? No thank you. I give both my wallet and my body a little TLC by bringing a reusable water bottle with me when I travel. Staying hydrated is key. Who wants to spend their time away feeling sick? Not I. Fill up the water bottle once you get through security and if you keep refiling throughout your travels I promise you’ll arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and ready for your endeavors.

3.   Avoid Being Hangry
I don’t know about you but I am so not myself when I’m hungry. Before you head to the airport make a pit stop at either a market or your local grocery store. Having fresh food stashed in your carry on is a game changer while traveling. Need suggestions on what to bring? Apples, nuts and/or protein bars are always a smart choice!

4.   Germ Freak
You know that embarrassing girl on the plane that wipes down the arm rest area with a towelette? That’s me. No shame in my travel game. Some items that can always be found in my carry on are: hand sanitizer, face spritzer, tissues, hand moisturizer and saline spray. I suggest you throw them in your bag so you too can take care of yourself even when flying among the clouds.

5.   Just Do It
Working out when traveling should not be a painful experience. Depending on where your travels take you – plan your workouts accordingly. Headed to the tropics? Looks like a beach run is in your future. Cooped up due to snow? There are plenty of exercises you can do right in your hotel room. If you have a workout membership such as ClassPass take advantage of trying a new studio. No excuses!

6.   Daily Healthy Decision
A large part of traveling is experiencing the culture and trying new foods – as you should. However, if you make the promise to yourself to eat one healthy meal a day it will make a substantial difference.

7.   Feel Your Best
Your skincare routine + vitamin regimen, etc. should also be on your packing list. Just because you are out of office does not mean you can slack on taking care of yourself.

8.   Ask For Suggestions
Whenever you find yourself in a new city, don’t be afraid to ask for suggestions. Whether you need insight on where to find a nutritious and delicious meal, what café is best to take pictures at (do it for the gram), or the top tourist attractions to check off your list – simply ask or spend your time doing research before takeoff.
