Foods That Help You Keep Your Cool
I’m about to let in on a personal secret, just promise you won’t tell everyone – ok? I have the appetite of 250-pound linebacker, no joke. If my metabolism wasn’t that of an elder I would eat every second of every day and when life moves too quick for me to keep up, I become the definition of a stress eater. Since I actually am a health nut I’ve had to learn what nutrition filled food options help me destress instead of speeding to the nearest froyo shop for a quick fix.
Feeling stressed? Here are 6 healthy food options to snack on:
1. Get Nutty
A handful of nuts (walnuts, almonds, cashews are my favorites) is one of the best snacks, regardless of your stress levels but if you are feeling stress creeping in grab some nuts and let them work their magic.
2. The Good Stuff
Bring on the dark chocolate! Of course this is to be consumed in moderation but dark chocolate is said to be one of the most potent endorphin producing foods on the EARTH. I don’t know about you but that’s enough scientific research for me to justify the chocolate intake ;) TIP: look for imported dark chocolate with a cocoa content of 70% or more.
3. Time To Smell
Ok, trust me on this one … the urine smell of asparagus is worth the stress relieving affect. Asparagus is full of B vitamin which is proven to help you chill out so steam some spears, throw them in your salad for VOILA!
4. Berry Helpful
Pour berries in a bowl and let them combat stress for you! All types of berries are crazy packed with Vitamin C which can be your BFF when you’re having one of those days.
5. Avocado Addict
Unless you’ve been living under a rock you know that avocados are one of the healthiest fats you could feed your body but the pros to this food doesn’t stop there. Avocados, without question, will help you to keep your cool on days where you feel like banging your head against a wall. TIP: a thin slice will go a long way! If you were planning on having a sandwich, replace the condiments (mayo, mustard, etc) with an avocado slice.
6. End Of The Road
Since I’m not a certified dietitian I don’t feel bad for what I’m about to say…..if you are convinced that that blueberry muffin or Reese peanut butter cup is going to change your mood for the better then you know what? Go for it. You’ll just work extra hard in the gym tomorrow, right? ;) The key to this game is knowing to consume in moderation. If you’re having a hell of a day then fine, have chips with your lunch instead of fruit BUT consider that your “cheat” for the day and then make sure you have a nutrient packed dinner - deal?
